Wallace was an Easter present and lived in a backyard for six years. His owner went to feed him one winter evening and slipped and fell. This fall would forever change the course of many lives. The man who had loved Wallace for so many years was so injured that he had to leave his job Wallace lay alone in the backyard for months. No one noticed that he grew too fat to see, or hear, or even walk. His tusk grew into his cheek. He was stuck out in all weather in one small space. The wife feared that Wallace could not survive the winter in the open and she was right. We went to get him and brought him back. He was our first fat-blind pig and he taught us a great deal about how to rehabilitate them and the healing powers of just sitting and gaining the trust of an animal without sight or hearing. The bond that develops is unlike any other.
Wallace can now see and hear and lives with a small herd of other pigs. He has never
forgotten that special person who sat and shared his silent, dark world for many months...and
none of us will ever forget the lessons that he has taught us.
